  • ISO 9000 – Fundamentals and Vocabulary: this introduces the user to the concepts behind the management systems and specifies the terminology used.
  • ISO 9001 – Requirements: this sets out the criteria you will need to meet if you wish to operate in accordance with the standard and gain certification.
  • ISO 9004 – Guidelines for performance improvement: based upon the eight quality management principles, these are designed to be used by senior management as a framework to guide their organizations towards improved performance by considering the needs of all interested parties, not just customers.

In 1997 a group of health and safety and procurement professionals from across Great Britain worked with the Association of London Government (ALG) to develop CHAS. In 2001 CHAS became a web-based system.

CHAS started with two main aims.

  1. To improve health and safety standards across Great Britain.
  2. To reduce duplicated safety applications for both suppliers and buyers.

These days we have more than 400 public and private sector buyer organisations, such as councils, housing associations, NHS trusts, including a growing number of large private companies who employ sub-contractors.

It is supported, amongst others, by government, trading standards and the Heath and Safety Executive. BAFE adopts third party Certification schemes developed by independent certifications bodies and where there are not relevant schemes in place, develops its own.

The Safe Contractor programme allows clients to benchmark our health and safety performance

Clients have a legal obligation to ensure that contractors operate in a safe way. There is therefore a need to assess contractors' health & safety arrangements, and increasingly this is being carried out through SAFEcontractor. Many large organisations now use SAFEcontractor as their primary means of selecting contractors. SAFEcontractor is effectively the client's approved contractor list.

Fire Safe Services Ltd, of Bromsgrove, West Midlands have just been awarded a Kitemark licence for Fire Alarm Systems under the BSI Kitemark scheme based on BAFE scheme SP203.

The official presentation of this prestigious licence will take place at the BSI Product Services exhibition stand at the forthcoming International Fire Expo at the NEC, Birmingham from 21st – 24th May 2007.

Fire Safe Services Ltd was started  in 2004 by Louise Dowell and Nicholas Fenton, both of whom have industry experience from larger organisations. Three years on and Fire Safe Services now employs 12 staff and have their own offices on Saxon Business Park, Stoke Prior near Bromsgrove.
